Lionel Messi has decided to invite all of his current Barcelona team-mates to his wedding to Antonella Roccuzzo later this month. Messi will get married in his hometown of Rosario in Argentina on June 30. He has also chosen to invite former team-mate and close friend Xavi, who he played with at Barcelona for over a decade.
Xavi’s former partner in midfield, Andres Iniesta, was invited but isn’t expected to attend. Messi has decided to do what Xavi did when he married Nuria Cunillera and not invite members of the club’s board to the wedding. It is understood he also took the decision to avoid any conflict between former Barcelona presidents Joan Laporta and Sandro Rosell.
Others not to make it on to the list include: former manager Luis Enrique, former assistant manager Juan Carlos Unzue, The Barcelona star has also asked those attending not to buy wedding presents and instead make a donation to his foundation.
Who missed out?
Despite having spent the last three years of his life in the Camp Nou dugout, outgoing Barca coach Luis Enrique failed to get an invite to Messi’s special day. But Enrique isn’t alone. Messi also snubbed all the Barcelona coaches, while no members of the board of directors were invited either.
By contrast, all 21 squad players at the Camp Nou have been invited, although it’s already known that some players will not attend, such as Andres Iniesta. Sport also report that Messis are starting a charitable foundation, and they are asking all their guests to donate to that cause rather than giving them any gifts.
Leo Messi’s wedding
One of the biggest events of the summer will be Leo Messi’s wedding to Antonella Roccuzzo in the couple’s hometown of Rosario in Argentina. The big date is set for June 30. One of the big topics of conversation in the build up to the wedding has involved speculation that Gerard Pique and Shakira will attend the event, amid rumours that the couples don’t get on off the pitch.
On Wednesday, Spanish daily Sport have revealed their information on some of the guests at the Messi wedding, with the headline news being that not every member of Barca’s 2016-17 squad received an invitation.
